Located in the town of Markina-Xemein, at one of the most iconic points along the Northern Way of the Camino de Santiago, the Hermitage of Arretxinaga welcomes thousands of pilgrims and visitors each year. For many, this remarkable place offers a moment of pause along the journey, a space where the monumental presence of its three great boulders, the silence, and the architecture invite contemplation and a connection with something beyond the everyday and beyond the human scale.
The permanent light and sound installation was conceived to deepen that experience while preserving the site’s unique character. Through a restrained and respectful intervention, light reveals the strength and texture of the stone, while a carefully composed soundscape envelops the space with a presence that is both subtle and immersive, creating an atmosphere that encourages contemplation and deep listening.
Rather than pursuing spectacle, we have created a sensitive artistic experience in which technology recedes into the background, allowing the hermitage and its extraordinary natural heritage to take centre stage. The installation does not seek to explain the place, but to create the conditions for each visitor to experience it in a deeply personal way, a moment of connection with matter, with the universe, with the passage of time, with the transcendent dimension of the space, and ultimately, with themselves.
