SEACID is a Data Art installation based on data from the Oceans that explores the relationship between humans and our planet, and also makes a call for responsibility to take care of nature. The artwork is made by the analysis of data sheets provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the United States and shows the trend of the last 140 years of temperature variations in the Oceans. The alarming increase of the registered temperatures especially from the 80’s till nowadays, impacts especially the global heating and the increase of the sea level, and the acidification process of the seawater.
This acidification process produces because of the rise of the dissolved carbon dioxide in the sea, which produces a reaction with carbonate calcium and makes the sea more acidic. The Ocean’s PH reduction causes changes in its chemical composition that have an impact on the growth, procreation, and other physiological phenomenons of the species that live in the Oceans. And also causes the impossibility of developing their exoskeleton and the extinction of different sea species.
