We have designed a permanent light and sound installation to enhance the value of the Blast Furnace No. 1 of Sestao. To enhance the scope not only emotional but also tractor of cultural and industrial tourism in Greater Bilbao, we have technically designed and installed a lighting system that respects this monument of industrial heritage, declared a Cultural Asset in 1999.
The lighting system of the Blast Furnace is technically composed of 16 RGBW luminaires and a DMX control system that allows us to design visual scenes associated with a soundscape that takes us back to the period of greatest activity of the Altos Hornos de Vizcaya, the largest company in Spain during much of the twentieth century. The soundscape, composed in collaboration with the musician Joseba Beristain, who has been nominated for the Goya awards for best original song in 2023, addresses different phases of the activity of the Blast Furnace itself. From the extraction of raw materials in the mines, the transformation of iron into pig iron, the production of products for other industries, and the social, economic and emotional impact it had on society as well. The artistic installation, which is currently being implemented in the urban environment of the Sestao Blast Furnace, will be available to be enjoyed from the beginning of 2024 permanently, at a time to be determined.
This artistic project aims to be a tribute to Sestao’s Blast Furnace No. 1, an emblem of the industrial landscape of Greater Bilbao from the late 1950s to the present day. A gift to the citizens of Sestao and Gran Bilbao, as well as a sustainable claim for industrial tourism in the Basque Country. It is a continuation of our effort to enhance the value of the industrial heritage started in 2020 with the artistic project Carolaren Arima on the Carola Crane at the Itsasmuseum Bilbao.
