Liminal is a digital artwork based on real data that invites reflection on the demographic and social future of the Álava region. The project was developed for the inauguration of the new Arkabia cultural centre, promoted by the Vital Foundation, and was displayed on the building’s digital art façade, connecting everyday life in the city with a speculative look towards the future.
Based on statistical data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) and other open data sources, the project analyses and projects key variables such as population trends, immigration, births, deaths, emigration and talent loss over a 50-year period. This data, transformed using generative techniques, is converted into a constantly changing visual landscape that beats, breathes and transforms over time.
Far from offering a literal or explanatory reading of the figures, Liminal translates the data into an aesthetic and emotional experience. Organic forms, particle flows, voids and visual pulses function as metaphors for the major challenges facing the territory: an ageing population, cultural diversity, migration dependency and long-term social sustainability.
The work establishes a direct dialogue between the future of the territory and the urban present, projected onto the LED façade of the cultural centre as a permanent reminder that demographic transformations are not abstract, but affect the way we live together, care for each other and build community.
At ElektrART, we took on the entire project: from the creative concept and statistical analysis of the data to its future projection, the visual and aesthetic design of the work, the artistic production, and its technical integration into the digital façade. This project uses art and technology as tools to encourage a critical, sensitive, and human perspective on the future of Álava.
